What is the "ISM"?
What is the "International Student Movement"?
The "International Student Movement" [ISM] is a platform used by groups and activists around the world struggling against the commercialisation and privatisation of public education and for free and emancipatory education to network, share information and co-ordinate protests together.
The ISM was initiated at the University of Marburg [Germany] and is independent from any political parties, unions or other institutions. It is dominated by grassroots groups/movements and generally open to everyone [students, pupils, lecturers, parents, workers,...].
Different groups in different countries are in charge for the administration in different languages [so far French, German, English, Spanish and Portuguese].
The following tools are used:
- this website [to share news]
- the forums on this website [to discuss, network and co-ordinate]
- a mailing list with close to 900 addresses worldwide [~ 5 mails per week; to inform and announce]
- international online chat meetings twice a month [to co-ordinate, network and discuss; details are communicated via the mailing list and are also available here]
- a Wiki [to inform and network]
- a twitter channel [to spread information]
- page on facebook [to spread the word and network]
So far various groups used the platform to initiate and co-ordinate the "International Day of Action against the Commercialisation of Education" [Nov.5th 2008], "Reclaim your Education - Global Week of Action" [April 20-29th 2009] and the "Education is NOT for $A£€ - Global Week of Action" [Nov.5th + 09-18th 2009].
Activists now decided to call for a "Global Wave of Action for Education" [Oct./Nov. 2010]!!
